Bonnets-Hats
A baby’s outfit is never that complete without bonnets/hats. But these are not simply worn to satisfy aesthetics, but to serve a noble purpose as well.
The choice of bonnets/hats for babies is extensive. Everywhere you go, you’ll find dozens and dozens of assortments, each one complementing whatever outfit the baby wears.
The use of bonnets/hats is crucial in the proper care of babies – particularly the newborns. The headwear will ensure that the baby’s temperature is sufficiently warm. Since baby hats and baby bonnets are essential, they are considered as staple items of the newborn’s layette. Young babies or infants are not capable of regulating their bodily temperatures all by themselves. Also, they tend to lose about 30% of body heat via their heads. Thus, to achieve the appropriate temperature, and to prevent excessive heat loss, infant hats are a must.
Although infants need to wear hats the most, it does not mean that older babies do not have anything to do with hats anymore. As a matter of fact, babies, regardless how old they are, require these headpieces, basically for the same reason that infants do. This means that, a baby hat has the same function and as an infant hat.
Baby bonnets, as well as baby hats come in several different styles and shapes. Generally though, a hat is made to fit snugly over the top of the baby’s head, and is made to cover the forehead. A bonnet on the other hand, is slipped over the back of the baby’s head, and is not designed to cover the forehead. Both varieties each come in various shapes and styles to suit different needs and tastes. A lot of baby clothes are coordinated. Meaning, these can be bought with a matching bonnet or hat.
Although most parents choose a bonnet or hat according to how well it goes with the baby’s clothes, there are certain things that need consideration as well. Before you buy a particular hat or bonnet, check if the fabric is soft and breathable. Since 30% body heat may be lost through the baby’s head, there is a chance that the head can overheat. Breathable fabric does not entrap heat, keeping the temperature at a comfortable level.
Baby hats or baby bonnets should provide a good fit. Overly fit ones may cause discomfort and/or pain to the baby. Moreover, trapped heat may only cause baby’s temperature to rise, causing overheat.
Another important thing to remember when shopping for bonnets/hats is that there sizes are typically approximate. This means that since there are a whole lot of variations in head sizes, it is very hard to figure out if a size 3-6 months offers a good fit to your 5-month old baby. Some parents bring along their babies when shopping for proper fitting. However, if you’re baby is not around to fit the head piece, there are size charts available on most stores that show the average head size according to the baby’s age.
Keep in mind though that it is better to buy a bonnet or hat that is larger than the baby’s head, than something that is too tight. If this is your second time to shop for hats though, you can bring an old hat of your baby to compare with your new purchase. If he has outgrown the old one, at least you will know which larger size to get.
Since most items can be exchanged, do not settle for something that does not give the appropriate fit. Exercise your freedom and get a better-fitting size. After all, it won’t serve your baby well if it’s not the right hat size.
