Diaper Rash Cream

Among all the inevitabilities that come with child-rearing, diaper rash is one of the most common – and harsh. Although most of the time, babies merely have one that passes away very quickly, there are others who have it for prolonged periods. Some even have it bad and have to contend with blistering or bleeding rashes. Thus, to make sure that babies are free from this painful condition, parents have to understand just how delicate baby’s skin is, and to have diaper rash cream on hand at all times.

Even if diaper rash is common, there are a lot of myths surrounding it, such as: it is abnormal; it is a sign that the baby has yeast infection or diarrhea; it is a symptom of formula or food allergy; and baby’s bottom should be free from rash and perfectly smooth.

Just because you have a diaper rash cream ready does not mean that theirs is nothing else you can do to prevent the onset of diaper rash. Babies develop diaper rash are mostly caused by the friction created by the diaper. Since babies have very sensitive skin, and diapers have certain chemicals, the skin gets irritated easily. Sometimes, the prolonged use of wet or dirty diaper causes diaper rash.

For babies who have never or who are not constantly suffering from diaper rash, it is still important for their parents to use some kind of anti diaper rash cream on them. Most of these are only good in preventing diaper rash from occurring, and do not work well in treating it. Thus, these are one of the most important items during nappy changes.

There are several ways to avoid the occurrence of diaper rash. For one, frequent diaper change is crucial. Newborn should have nappy changes every two hours. Older babies may have less frequent diaper changes, depending on how often they urinate.

Dirty diapers should be changes right away. Newborns may require you to do this more often, as they tend to have frequent but smaller stools. Typically though, this does not happen as much as the baby grows.

Use different kinds of diaper brands until you have found the one which does not seem to irritate his skin. Some brands may provide a better fit, thus reducing friction.

When wiping baby’s bottom, opt for the unscented wipes, or use plain water instead. Scented wipes contain fragrances which are actually potential irritants. Washing with clean water is the best means to clean the baby’s bottom though.

Finally, use diaper rash cream. Although some babies do not need this, others may require application after each diaper change. There are actually two types of this: the petroleum ointment or the original A+D diaper rash cream, and the white zinc oxide.

The petroleum or A+D ointment is the perfect choice for preventive purposes. This can be used as an everyday ointment as it is less messy and is not as sticky as those in the other type. The white zinc oxide has thicker texture, and is most suitable for babies who are more susceptible to having diaper rash.

For parents who can’t get a diaper rash cream prescription, they can actually create their very own homemade diaper rash cream. They can simply mix the following and apply on the affected area on the baby’s bottom: zinc oxide, acid mantle or lanolin ointment called Lansiloh, aluminum acetate or Burrow’s solution, and white petroleum ointment.

Although most diaper rash are non-emergency cases or does not require immediate medical attention, they are generally painful and a huge discomfort to babies. Since, babies depend on their parents for protection, then they should get all the help they can – no more, no less.
