First Aid Kits

No matter how careful people may be, there are always accidents waiting to happen. But even if it is impossible to foresee their arrival, people can’t simply let these hazards get the better of them.

First aid kits are our best response to accidents and emergency situations. For those who have no idea what to put together to come up with first aid kits which contain all the essentials, they can simply buy the pre-packaged ones which are widely-available on the market. Although you can’t expect these to contain everything you might need in emergency situations, these still have a lot of the most essential items. Moreover, these are very practical, and will spare you from the hassle of putting together a first aid kit from scratch.

The need to have more than one first aid kit in the house actually depends on the family’s lifestyle. Some parents may choose to have several first aid kits: one large kit meant for home use; a small one to fit into the diaper bag, or your purse; and carry-around kit, which may be placed inside the car for use during trips. It is essential to note though that extreme cold or heat may affect the efficiency of some items in a first aid kit, such as medications. Thus, first aid kit contents require replacement every now and then, particularly those which are found inside the car.

First aid kits may be our best ally during accidents and emergencies. However, they have to be kept out of children’s reach. Make sure that kits are inside lunchboxes or zippered bags, as kids may get their hands on the items. Much as they are used to address injuries and other minor health conditions, the items inside the first aid kits can be potential dangers to children.

First aid kits should contain more than just the usual medications and treatment essentials. Names and the contact numbers of people and offices, including emergency numbers, should be glued inside the kits. The important phone numbers are those of the following: pediatrician or family doctor, local hospital, local rescue, police, and fire squad, American Association of Poison Control Center, family members’ office and mobile numbers, and at least two close neighbors. These emergency numbers should also be pasted near the telephone and in other pertinent areas of the house, such as the kitchen.

Creating your own first aid kit can be a challenge. Since you cannot have all the essentials in a single product, you may simply buy the pre-assembled first aid kits, and just add other items which you find important.

Parents who’d rather choose all the items inside their first aid kits are likely going to try to squeeze in several things. However, there are only too many vital items that your kit can accommodate. If you want to obtain a good checklist of the items, you can visit several websites online. You can eliminate some items or add a few more if you think the list left out some things very important.

Pre-packaged first aid kits can be bought at local pharmacies. Also, you can obtain a basic manual on first aid from the American Red Cross. There are plenty of books about first aid in the local bookstores which might be very helpful.

First aid kits may serve us well during emergencies. However, this should not be treated as the best and only means to treat injuries or health conditions where immediate medical attention is required. First aid kits simply work like doctors in addressing minor issues, and when a more extensive medical procedure is not yet available.
