Maternity Clothes
They were once festooned with oversized bows and big polka dots that made pregnant women look unusually funny, they were “trademarks” of the “I am pregnant” beware sign. Those days of embarrassing and frumpy maternity clothes are gone. Pregnant women don’t really need to wear overly decorated clothes for pregnancy, or even buy clothes that are just larger sizes of the regular versions.
Today, maternity clothes have become more “fitter” and simply stylish. After all, dealing with the changing waistline is already hard enough for pregnant women and the last thing they need is to look either bigger or funnier. Maternity clothes these days are designed especially for the changing body of expectant mothers, as well as make them look prettier and let them feel more confident about their body size.
Modern maternity clothing is usually replicas of stylish clothes in the market, but they’re shaped in a different way to accommodate the new shape. They’re designed to perfectly fit the areas that need more room and stretch, particularly the bust and tummy. The major difference of pregnancy clothes is that they adjust to the fitting of the body as the belly grows.
Nearly all maternity skirts and pants have adjustable “waist bands” that decrease or increase as the belly increases. Within the “waist band” is a piece of slotted “elastic” that fastens to its button. As the belly increases in size, the extra length of elastic can be pulled out to increase the stretch of the skirt or pant. Pregnancy tops are frequently shaped with added room on the belly area, or have a “tie” that goes across its back and can be adjusted according to the tummy size.
Maternity clothes are also made with panels that support the belly. Bellies can be quite heavy during pregnancy and these support panels make it a lot easier on the mom. The panels may not be that attractive as they largely stretch across the belly in a different color, but the days will come when they’d be very useful and moms will be grateful that it’s there. Fortunately, there are various support options for support in maternity skirts and pants.
Actual waist pants look like typical pants, but with the “extendable elastic” concealed within the waistband. This waistband is placed low or at the middle area of the belly, providing support all through the whole pregnancy.
“Full panel” pants have stretchy, knit, and soft panels that wrap-around the entire waist. It sits above the belly providing ultimate support for the last two “trimesters” without compressing the belly. Maternity pants that have side panels provide two stretchy support panels at the pant’s sides, cradling the belly and giving support most appropriate for the second trimester.
The majority of maternity clothes are based on similar sizes to the normal clothes. If the usual size during “not pregnant” days is medium, then medium will still be the size for maternity clothes. It’s as easy as that, and there’s no more need for measuring tapes for girth measurements or trying piles of same pants in different sizes.
It is important to choose maternity clothes that are fitted to the size, and not go for overly big sizes. Remember, if there’s one thing that pregnant women are not comfortable with, its there bloated appearance. This actually made to appear better with the right sizes of maternity clothing, as well as the right colors and designs. Dark colors will always make one appear smaller, and can easily be accessorized with almost anything.
Maternity clothes shopping can be as enjoyable and exciting as when you’re shopping for normal clothes. The long time planning and designing of maternity designers have finally paid off –maternity looks no longer have to be odd, but they’re now as sleek and fashionable as those that go with the runway.
