Potty Seats

Among the most important decisions parents have to do in their lifetime is choosing the potty seats which will give the most benefits to their children. Although this seems like a very easy task, it actually entails a lot of thought and more than just a superficial knowledge of the various options available.

A lot of parents choose potty seats over the stand-alone potty chairs because these spare them from giving their children further training in using the adult toilet. The potty seats are way more portable than the chairs. When going out of the house, either for quick trips to the mall, or to a holiday vacation, parents do not have to pack something bulky. Potty seats can easily fit right inside the bag and can be used everywhere. Another big advantage is maintenance. Since the child’s waste goes right into the adult toilet rather than inside a potty bowl, parents can worry less about cleaning. Wastes do not have to be taken out from the potty bowl, and dumped into the regular toilet. No more cleaning and rinsing of potty bowls. All parents have to do is regularly wiping the potty seats to ensure they’re clean.

Although the potty training seat offers a lot of benefits, it also comes with its share of drawbacks. First, its use is limited to the bathroom only. Thus, potty training cannot be done in any room or any other area of the house, except the bathroom. Second, the adult toilet mostly scares children. This is because they have to be propped up on the seat, with legs dangling, rather than being able to put their feet on the ground when using the stand-alone potty chairs.

But most parents find these snags easy to live with. For them, it is very normal to deal with a child’s fear of using the adult toilet. They’d rather work with that fear, rather than having to teach their children to shift from the potty chair to the potty seat.

As with the potty chairs, there are also a huge variety of styles and designs of potty seats to choose from. There are certain models which are very elaborate to enhance the child’s potty training sessions. The very common and widely-available potty training seats are less elaborate, but are highly functional as well. They too, come in different colors, styles, and designs. One of the most important features which the basic potty seat should have is the splash guard. The foldable type is also a good choice since it is less of a hassle to store or carry around when traveling.

Choosing the best potty seat for you child may be a decision that you don’t have to do alone. Take your child with you when shopping. Make him sit on the various options available to check which size gives the best fit. Most often, the best-fitting seat dictates the outcome of the training and how fast the child achieved it. Also, give him the freedom to choose which design interests him the most. Since learning the skill is a whole new experience for him, and a confusing one at that, he will need all the motivation and support he can get. A parent who goes against the type of potty seat that his child seems to be very fond of may only cause the child to resent or resist using it. Since the child will be using it for himself, his choice ought to work for him. Choosing the best potty seat does not depend on the personal preference of the parents. Further, this is one area of child rearing where parents do not know best.
