Shoes

Babies don’t really need the type of shoes that adults do. That is, not unless they’re starting to walk. However, baby shoes serve to complete a baby’s overall get-up. And although they don’t really have particular sense of style just yet, their shoes will give them a head start on fashion.

Obviously, the purpose of infant shoes and baby shoes is not entirely the same as that of adults’. Shoes intended for babies are designed to satisfy few simple goals. Unlike adults shoes which are exposed to running, walking, and some other activities, baby shoes are supposed to be worn to provide warmth and protection.

One of the most common questions that parents ask has something to do with when their babies need to start wearing shoes. But up to now, there is a huge controversy over it is appropriate to let babies wear shoes in the first place.

Infants or the very young babies do not really require shoes. Booties or socks are enough protection for their delicate feet. However, when they began to stand or walk on their feet, better protection for their feet is necessary. Thus, parents who shop with only the shoes’ physical qualities in mind, are depriving the babies of what they truly need.

When shopping for baby shoes, there are several things to consider. For one, ensure that it gives the proper fit. Shoes which are either too loose or too tight won’t serve their purpose. Ill-fitting shoes are likely to cause blisters or could be painful to use, hampering proper walking.

High leather shoes, which are stiff, have not been proven to aid babies in walking. Although the feet may need some sort of support from the shoes, it requires them to be flexible and soft as well. Soft leather baby shoes are nice alternatives, as they are not likely to cause harm to the baby’s feet. Babies who are barely able to walk on their own are capable of learning balancing techniques. Thus, hard, high-top footwear is completely unnecessary. Also, the soles should be the non-slippery type. Otherwise slips and falls are likely to happen all the time.

Look for shoes that feature safe closures. Velcro fasteners are very common and are some of the best options. If the shoes chosen though come with laces, make sure that these are double-knotted to prevent them from getting undone. Buckle straps and other closures should be checked that they are snug, but not too tight.

Not all shoe companies use the same size metrics. Thus, if your baby feels most comfortable in a pair that is not his usual size, then, buy that pair. Do not rely on only one specific sizing. There are also size charts available that allows you to match different sizes.

Your child’s left foot may differ slightly in size with that of the right foot. This normal discrepancy is nothing to be alarmed about. When choosing the right shoe size, go for the particular pair where the larger foot fits in. Make sure that there is about half an inch of space between the tip of the shoe and the longest toe. The space will allow the toes to wiggle, without the heels slipping off when walking.

Even though babies can’t say much about style and fashion, they have their own criteria of choice. Squeaky shoes are usually a favorite. The sounds encourage babies to move around a lot more, and mothers can likewise keep track of their babies’ movements.

Whatever type or style of shoes you buy for your baby, just make sure that it offers real comfort and allow his feet to do its task well.
